A new coat of paint on your front door can give your home freshness, and change the mood or look of the entire outside of your home.

Types of Paint

For exterior doors, an exterior acrylic latex paint is usually the best choice, with an oil-based primer. This type of paint best covers most types of old paint that may be on the door. If the door is being painted for the first time, then you could also choose an oil-based paint.

Techniques

When painting your front door you will first want to pick a nice, not too humid and not too cool day so that the paint will dry completely in one day. Also, you should pick a day that you don’t mind leaving your front door off the hinges for the day. You can use the hinges from the door to hang a piece of plywood in the door space while you paint your front door, or cover the door opening with plastic.

You can start by removing the door from the hinges and placing it on sawhorses, preferably outside in a well-ventilated area. You can then remove the door handle and any hardware attached to the door. Cover with painter’s tape any trim, windows, and anything else that you don’t want to get paint on.

Thouroughly clean the door by scrubbing the surface with a wet sponge, allow to dry, then sand the surface of the door. Patch any cracks in the door with a quick-drying wood filler, then when it drys, sand the filler to make it smooth. Use a rag to brush off the dust from sanding, and you will be ready to apply the primer.

Apply the primer to the all surfaces on the door and let it dry completely. Then you are ready to apply the paint. Start by using a brush to paint any raised or depressed panels on the door, or around any crevices. You can then proceed to paint the flat surfaces of the door with a roller, if you choose.Once the first coat is applied, allow it to dry, and apply a second coat for a beautiful finish.
